About

Peter Tries Rice Cakes is a parody and remix series based on a clip of the character Peter Griffin from Family Guy trying to eat a rice cake, which has been heavily data moshed and corrupted with loud audio for humorous effect. The original edit, using a scene from season 10 episode seven of the series, was posted to Instagram in November 2011 and inspired further edits over the following years.

Origin

On November 27, 2011, season 10 episode seven of Family Guy titled "Amish Guy" was released in which Peter Griffin is shown attempting to eat a rice cake, resulting in him writhing in agony on the ground and coughing it back up, exclaiming "Who could think of such a horrible thing?" (shown below).

On August 3rd, 2017, Instagram[1] user @septic_meme uploaded a datamoshed version of the clip with heavily distorted visuals and loud audio. On August 26, YouTuber Alex Wheeler reposted the video, which gained over 5.7 million views in six years.

Spread

In late 2019, the video became an ironic source for YTPMV creators, with three videos being created with the source all simultaneously on November 22, 2019. The first video was created by YouTuber soaroz, featuring a YTPMV of the song "Foruma" by RL Grime and Juels (shown below, left). The second video created that day was by Youtuber Xarlable, featuring the song "Mumbai Power" by Skrillex (shown below, right).

On June 21st, 2021, YouTuber Xickel posted a 3D animated version of the scene, garnering over 1.8 million views in two years (shown below).
