John Mulaney is an American comedian best known for his work on Saturday Night Live and several popular stand-up specials. Some of his most popular segments have been referenced online in memes.

History

John Mulaney was born August 26th, 1982 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.^[1] He began working at Comedy Central out of college as an office assistant, and pitched the I Love the 80s parody I Love the 30s, which he developed with Nick Kroll.

He began writing for Saturday Night Live in 2008, and occasionally appeared on the "Weekend Update" segment of the show. Notably, he helped create the Stefon character played by Bill Hader. Mulaney was a writer on SNL for six years.

During this time, Mulaney also worked as a stand-up comedian, releasing two specials: The Top Part (2009) and New In Town (2012). After he left SNL, he released two other specials: The Comeback Kid (2015) and Kid Gorgeous (2018). Mulaney also produced starred and in a short-lived sitcom called Mulaney in 2013, which was poorly reviewed and borrowed many bits from his stand-up routines. Mulaney appeared alongside Nick Kroll on Broadway in a show called Oh, Hello, which featured characters Mulaney and Kroll developed on The Kroll Show (clip shown below).

"What's New Pussycat?" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and sung by Welsh vocalist Tom Jones. It became notable online following a stand-up comedy routine by Mulaney that centered around playing the song in a diner. The song became most notable online following the release of a popular stand-up comedy routine by Mulaney called "The Salt and Pepper Diner." In the routine, Mulaney tells a story about how he and his friend selected the song to play over and over in a jukebox at a diner. The song plays several times, much to the chagrin of the diner's patrons. As part of their prank, the pair selected another Tom Jones hit, "It's Not Unusual," to play after several runs of "What's New Pussycat?" This was a major relief for the customers, until "What's New Pussycat" began playing again. The routine was included in Mulaney's album The Top Part, released March 24th, 2009 on iTunes.^[2]
