If You Don't Like X, You Should Try Again! refers to a series of exploitable image macro memes based on a version of the If You Like X, You Should Try Y format and phrasal template, which advises to give something you didn't like but is considered good by someone else another try. Spawned by a TikTok published in June 2023, the format achieved virality in June 2024.
Origin
On June 23rd, 2023, TikTok[1] user @logan_pete_ posted a video captioned "Drink alternatives." Formatted after the If You Like X, You Should Try Y trend, the video suggested that if one didn't like Dr. Pepper, they should try again. The video (shown below) garnered over 5.3 million views and 614,000 likes in one week.

On November 6th, 2023, Redditor Default_Male_Orc posted the earliest found meme which used the video as a template, recaptioning it. The post (shown below) received over 380 upvotes in /r/196[2] in eight months. On November 7th, Tumblr[3] user russianchoir reposted the image, with the post gaining over 11,400 reblogs and 16,000 likes in the same period.
Spread
The format did not achieve further spread until late June 2024. On June 24th, 2024, X[4] user @MoriCaliopeFeet posted a screenshot of the original TikTok, which received over 12,000 reposts and 111,000 likes in six days. In the following week, the image achieved popularity as a recaption format.
For example, on June 24th, X[5] user @rikuseph posted a version that received over 630 reposts and 3,700 likes in six days (shown below, left). On June 25th, X[6] user @pegoryukisz posted a meme that received over 1,100 reposts and 9,700 likes in five days (shown below, right).
The period of popularity of the format continued through late June 2024.
