About

Parody Donald Trump "Dow Joans" Tweet refers to a viral image of a parody of United States President Donald Trump's Twitter account. The tweet, which referenced a stock market crash from February 2018, parodies the frequent contradictions found between President Trump's prior tweets and his current-day positions.

Origin

On February 5th, 2018, Twitter user @ShaunUsher tweeted,[1] "There's *always* a tweet." Underneath the caption, he posted a mock tweet by President Donald Turmp that reads, "If the Dow Joans ever falls more than 1000 'points' in a Single Day the sitting president should be 'loaded' into a very big cannon and Shot into the sun at TREMENDOUS SPEED! No excuses!" The post (shown below) received more than 22,000 retweets and 48,000 likes in 24 hours.

Shortly after @ShaunUsher tweeted the image, people believed the tweet to be real. That day, Twitter[2] user @jmdono60 tweeted (shown below, left), "OMG, did the dumb SOB really spell it 'Joans'?" Others joked with @ShaunUsher's tweet. Twitter[3] user @tldevaney tweeted (shown below, center), "He was talking about the Dow Joans though. Joan Dow and her sister-in-law Joan Dow will not be let down!"

However, some online commented on how the fact the people believe this tweet is a testament to the trend of Trump's tweets contradicting his position. Twitter[4] user @jules_su tweeted, "imagine living in such a fucked up reality that you absolutely HAVE TO look up this tweet to make sure its fake." The tweet (shown below, right) received more than 745 retweets and 2,200 likes in 24 hours.

As the tweet became more popular, @ShaunUsher[5] began posting about how the tweet was a fake (shown below).

Later that day, Snopes [6] published an article debunking the tweet. Several media outlets covered the tweet, including TIME,[7] Business Insider,[8] HuffPost[9] and more.
