Rei Ayanami is a main character from the popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion and it's related movies. Rei, as with other characters in the series, is often argued as part of the Best Girl discussion along with Asuka Langley. Since her introduction, Rei has been used extensively in memes referencing NGE, as well as in standalone memes as a character that stands for depression, helplessness, and needing to be fixed or saved from her fate.


On October 4th, 1995, the first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion was released, with Rei being a focal point of the episode. Rei is first shown in the scene that would later become the meme Get In The Fucking Robot Shinji, in which a very damaged Rei is shown which causes Shinji to pilot the Unit 01.

The End of Evangelion is a 1997 animated film that serves as a conclusion to the 1995 anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. As Evangelion has a substantial following online, the film is popular among fans of the series and anime in general and has inspired numerous memes. Specifically, Rei is one of the biggest plot points of the film.

Online, the line is used to mockingly give praise to someone, and is generally accompanied by insincere clapping.

The Deegmeister is a TikToker and a shitposter who gained virality online in August 2021 with his image macro posts in which he confessed love for female anime characters from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Please Don't Bully Me, Nagatoro. The TikToks were interpreted both as ironic shitposting and as sincere by different users.
