About

"Ornithoscelida" refers to a newly proposed grouping of dinosaurs in an academic paper. Published in March 2017, the paper by Baron et al., titled "A new hypothesis of dinosaur relationships and early dinosaur evolution," hypothesizes that the long standing existing phylogeny for Dinosauria is incorrect. The revelation became the subject of memes after its publication.

Origin

In 1888, Harry Seeley split up the Group Dinosaura into two smaller groups; Saurischia and Ornithischia (colloquially known as Lizard-hipped and Bird-hipped respectively). This division has been considered the correct version for over 120 years.

Seeley's Model

The paper "A new hypothesis of dinosaur relationships and early dinosaur evolution" (Baron et al.)[1] suggests that the two groups in Saurischia are not closely related, and proposes that Theropoda be merged with Ornithischia to form Ornithoscelida, while Sauropodomorpha and Herrerasauridae remain in Saurischia. The group compared anatomical features of many different early dinosaurs and decided that Seeley's classification, which was based on similarities of hip bones, was inaccurate.

Spread

The paper was first published in the Scientific Journal Nature March 22rd 2017. The same day, the website for Scientific American blog Tetrapod Zoology by Darren Naish made a blog post talking about the paper.[3]

Several online paleontology communities discussed the implications of what the Baron et al. paper could mean if the hypothesis was found to be correct.[5] On Tumblr, references to this revelation were sorted under the tag "The Befuckening."[4]

Now try to imagine yourself in the Cretaceous Period. You get your first look at this "six foot turkey" as you enter a clearing. He moves like a bird, lightly, bobbing his head. And you keep still because you think that maybe his visual acuity is based on movement like T. rex; he'll lose you if you don't move. But no, not Velociraptor. You stare at him…and he just stares right back. And that's when the attack comes. Not from the front, but from the side. From the other two raptors…you didn't even know were there. Because Velociraptor's a pack hunter, you see, he uses coordinated attack patterns and he is out in force today. And he slashes at you with this: a six-inch retractable claw, like a razor, on the middle toe. He doesn't bother to bite your jugular like a lion, oh no…he slashes at you here or here… or maybe across the belly, spilling your intestines. The point is, you are alive when they start to eat you. So, you know…try to show a little respect.

Have you read John Conway's All Yesterdays? It's a great book about the possibilities of how dinosaurs looked and acted.

This picture, for example, is how a baboon might be rendered if treated the way we have typically treated dinosaur fossils. The book argues that fossils leave a lot of gaps in our understanding and that we should be open-minded in how we think of dinosaurs. The illustrations alone are well worth the price of the book.
