Hey, Wanna Listen to Some Tunes? refers to a clip of YouTuber Angry Video Game Nerd asking the viewer if they want to listen to some music and throwing an audio cassette on the floor behind his back. Online, the video has been popular source material for edits. In March 2020, the format saw a resurgence online.

Origin

On June 30th, 2013, YouTuber[1] Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) uploaded a review of 1991 video game Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure. In one part of the video, AVGN throws a cassette onto the floor, parodying a game mechanic. The video accumulated over 5.7 million views in seven years.

The earliest known humorous edit of the clip by YouTube[2] user FeebleGod on August 29th, 2013 (shown below, left), gaining over 1,600 views in seven years. On November 5th, 2013, YouTube[3] user RedGuy posted another edit, gaining over 1,600 views in the same period (shown below, right).

In the following years, the format saw a limited presence on YouTube.[4] For example, on June 23rd, 2015, YouTube user Neslope posted an edit that received over 2,000 views in four years (shown below, left). In 2019, the format saw an increase in use, with multiple versions of the meme being posted on YouTube.[5] For example, on March 2nd, 2019, YouTuber Sean Mulkern posted a Torture Dance meme that received 650 views in one year.



In late March 2020, the format saw a surge in popularity on Instagram. For example, on March 21st, Instagram[6] user pampam.mp4 posted an edit that received over 27,600 views and 6,700 likes in two weeks. On March 27th, 2020, Instagram[7] user ins.step posted a The Man Behind the Slaughter edit that received over 54,100 views and 17,000 likes in six days (shown below), also posting a green screen[8] of the video.



In the following days, the format saw a surge in use on Instagram, with notable edits posted by raeraerandy,[9] marsonevevo,[10] idieasvirgin[11] and other users.
