Overview

MineCon is an annual convention devoted to Minecraft which turned into an annual interactive live stream event in 2017.

Background

The first MineCon convention was held on November 18th, 2011 in Las Vegas with 5,000 people in attendance and celebrated the launch of the game with Minecraft-related discussion panels and gaming areas. The official website[1] for the event announced that they would be celebrating the official launch of the game:

Celebrate the official launch of Minecraft with your friends from around the world and the Mojang Team. Get ready for a fun weekend of everything Minecraft. The first MineCon is sure to blow away all of your expectations. Set in the fantastic city of Las Vegas, we are ready to have the ultimate “block” party.

On November 10th, 2011, Hat Films released a MineCon Trailer which received over 1.2 million views in eight years (shown below). Since 2017, MineCon has taken the form of an interactive live stream.

Notable Developments

Cringe Compilations

On November 2nd, 2013, YouTuber ScratchedTrucks uploaded the first of many cringe compilations associated with the convention (shown below, left). The videos mostly comprise of questions for the panel from the audience. On September 27th, 2016, SethShock uploaded the most popular MineCon cringe compilation which gained over 3.5 million views and 104,000 likes in nearly three years (shown below, right).

Dedotated Wam

Dedotated Wam is a mispronunciation of the phrase "dedicated RAM," which was originally mispronounced by a young fan during a panel at the Minecon 2013 Minecraft conference. The video clip of the mispronunciation inspired many remixes on YouTube. On November 2nd, 2013, YouTuber ZodiaxEU[1] uploaded a video titled "Dedotated Wam?" which features a young boy, identified as Superkai64[2], attending Minecon 2013 on November 2nd, 2013. He asks a panel what the "dedotated wam" is required for his Minecraft server, obviously mispronouncing "dedicated RAM." As of July 2014, the video has gained over 51,000 views.

MineCon on PewDiePie's Cringe Tuesdays

On May 8th, 2019, PewDiePie uploaded a video entitled "Minecon is the Greatest!" in which he watches MineCon cringe compilations (shown below, left). The video gained over 6.1 million views and 409,000 likes in six days. On May 9th, CaptainSparklez who was a panelist in a portion of the compilations responded to PewDiePie's video with his own acknowledging that he could've handled the questions better (shown below, right). The video gained over 179,000 views in five days.

Low-blow for Pewdiepie here. I mean, granted not as controversial as….other things that happened this month, but still.

like, making fun of kids and other players attending a fucking convention for a game they like? that's the real 'cringe' if anything, as well as just anyone still fucking using that garbage meme.
