Who Is 'Wapeach' And Why Are People Drawing Fan Art Of Her? The Scrapped 'Mario Tennis' Character Explained

Super Mario fans woke up to a pleasant surprise today after the creator of iconic character Waluigi dropped official concept art for the never-before-seen character Wapeach. Like Wario and Waluigi, Wapeach was meant to be the rival of Princess Peach before she was scrapped by Nintendo. Now, she's become the viral subject of fan art online. Here's what you need to know.

-Ha! Thought you could get past me without a duel, Princess Peach? Who even are you?

Who Is 'Wapeach?'

All the way back in an interview from 2000, it was revealed that a rival character for Princess Peach was originally going to appear in the Nintendo 64 game Mario Tennis. Mario Tennis, released that year, notably features the first appearance of Waluigi, a rival character for Luigi that features similar, yet more "evil," design choices.

According to the interview, Nintendo decided to scrap the character during production because she "wasn't cute." Apparently, that didn't stop Waluigi's designer Fumihide Aoki, who goes by Yuzumpo on Instagram, from drawing up concept art for the character, complete with a 3D render. Earlier today, Yuzumpo shared these pieces of concept art on Instagram, officially revealing the Mario Tennis character that was taken from players for the first time.

How Are People Reacting To 'Wapeach's' Reveal?

News of Wapeach's reveal quickly spread on social media as Super Mario fans rejoiced over the character's reveal. Opinions on the design are somewhat mixed, with many loving the way Wapeach looks and others thinking she could look a little more "evil" or similar to the designs of Wario and Waluigi.

Regardless of individual opinions on Wapeach, the character quickly became the subject of fan art online. Some users have been drawing Wapeach designs based on the official concept art, while others have been posting their own takes on the character.
