Eight Years Ago, The 'Triggered Feminist' Became A Meme That Just Won't Die
Chance The Rapper, formerly one of the most promising young stars in hip-hop before becoming the ultimate "Wife Guy" in the eyes of many, is getting a divorce.
His wife, Kirsten Corley, made the announcement on her Instagram Stories this afternoon.

Normally, a mildly high-profile divorce might barely register on social media's radar, but in this case, it has led to an outpouring of jokes and schadenfreude because of Chance the Rapper's 2019 album The Big Day, which was infamously memed due to just how much of it was devoted to the rapper loving his wife.
In fact, one meme by Twitter user @charliewinsmore_, a video in which he parodied Chance The Rapper on The Big Day by singing "Oooh I love my wi-iiife, GYAH" in Chance's cadence, has been widely credited for single-handedly killing Chance's career.

Thus, the news of Chance's divorce was met with more snideness than sympathy among social media users, as many interpreted it to mean the marriage that Chance had seemingly sacrificed his career for hadn't worked out.
Of course, the idea that Chance "loving his wife" killed his career is a gross oversimplification of the struggles the rapper faced at the time — he has been engaged with lawsuits with his management over The Big Day and has spent the previous five years focusing on television appearances more than music.
Still, the narrative suggesting that memes about Chance The Wife Guy ruined his career is embedded in many fans' minds, leading to much discussion and further memeing about their role in Chance and Corley's divorce.
