"This Is Some Serious Gourmet Shit" refers to a memorable quote said by character Jules Winnfield in 1994 crime film Pulp Fiction. Following the initial circulation as a reaction image, starting in March 2019 an image macro based on the scene has been used in reference to various foods which one would find palatable.

Origin

On October 14th, 1994, crime film Pulp Fiction, directed by Quentin Tarantino, premiered in the United states.^[1] In one scene of the movie, character Jules Winnfield, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, praises a coffee drink offered to him by character Jimmie, describing it as "some serious gourmet shit".

Mmm! God damn, Jimmie! This is some serious gourmet shit! Me and Vince would've been satisfied with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice, right? And he springs this serious gourmet shit on us! What flavor is this?

On December 18th, 2012, Tumblr user TheGoodFilms posted a semi-still captioned GIF based on the scene.^[2] The post gained over 25,800 likes and relblogs in seven years.

In the following years, this and similar GIFs based on the scene were posted online, including posts on Tumblr, GIPHY and other sites.^[3][4] Since 2012, the GIF has accumulated a history of use as a reaction, with examples appearing on Twitter, Reddit and other websites. For example, on October 21st, 2013, Reddit user SinisterWaffles posted the GIF to /r/reactiongifs subreddit, writing "As a young guy living alone, MRW my girlfriend makes me a grilled cheese."^[5] On April 10th, 2016, Reddit user iH8myPP posted a longer, edited version of the GIF to /r/HighQualityGifs subreddit, where it gained over 8,000 upvotes in six months.^[6]

On June 27th, 2017, Redditor ger_herbar used the GIF as a macro in /r/LatinoPeopleTwitter subreddit, pairing it with the caption "whenever my gringo friends have tried ponche:".^[7] The post gained over 230 upvotes in six months. On December 4th, Redditor Sadfalse submitted a llama photoshop of the GIF in a /r/photoshopbattles thread.^[8]

Starting in March 2019, the image gained saw increased use as an image macro on Reddit. On January 6th, 2019, Redditor ThrowingUpGengarSigns made a post in /r/memes subreddit which gained over 9,500 upvotes in three months (shown below, left).^[9] On March 24th, Redditor lubedipduck posted another meme utilizing the macro in /r/dankmemes subreddit, where it gained over 11,500 upvotes in eleven days (shown below, right).^[10]

In the following days, multiple variations of the meme appeared on Reddit, primarily in /r/memes and /r/dankmemes subreddits.
