I Lied to You, Take Off Your Clothes refers to a series of memes featuring Doge and other characters in which they state that the person reading the meme has been deceived and demand that they take off their clothes. The snowclone is based on a There Is No Meme, Take Off Your Clothes image macro series which originated in July 2019.
Origin
The exact origin of the meme is unknown. The earliest known "There Is No Meme, Take Off Your Clothes" meme was posted by Instagram user realstiffy on July 22nd, 2019, with meme character Beanos captioned with the phrase (shown below).[1] In the following days, the image was circulated online, with reposts to iFunny[2] and Reddit.[3]
On August 15th, 2019, Facebook community Augmentations posted the earliest known Ironic Doge meme containing the "I Lied to You" snowclone, with Doge admitting that he faked his interest in Arctic Monkeys and commanding the person reading the meme to take off their clothes (original post no longer available, scrapped post shown below).[4][5]
Spread
In the following days, the image has been widely circulated online, including reposts on iFunny[6] and Reddit.[7][8] On August 24th, 2019, Redditor angry_paul-le-epic posted a "There Is No Meme" edit featuring the former United States President Barack Obama (shown below).[9] The post received over 23,500 upvotes in three months.
On September 6th, 2019, Redditor BoopioYT posted a screenshot of a Tinder exchange in which they used a Doge version of the "There Is No Meme" format (shown below).[10] The post gained over 17,300 upvotes in /r/dogelore, with a crosspost to /r/tinder receiving over 27,500 upvotes.[11] A September 9th, 2019, Twitter repost of the exchange received over 1,000 retweets and 8,900 likes in three months.[12]
In the following months, both the snowclone and the image macro series saw the notable spread on Facebook, iFunny, Reddit and Instagram.
