About

Gwenpool (also known by real name "Gwen Poole") is a combination of Marvel Comics characters Gwen Stacy and Deadpool. Despite this and her name, the character has no relation to either of them.

History

Comics

Gwenpool first appeared on June 2015 in a Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars #2 variant cover (below, left) by Chris Bachalo, as a part of the "Gwen Variants" series.^[1] She became the most popular character from the other "Gwen Variants", even if she didn't appear in the actual comic. Following this, Gwen got her first full comic feature in "Miss Poole if You're Nasty": a three-part backup story in Howard the Duck Vol. 6 #1, written by Christopher Hastings and art by Danilo Beyruth (variant cover below, right).

Hastings returned as writer for Gwenpool's Holiday Special, along with art by Japanese duo Gurihiru. Her solo series, The Unbelievable Gwenpool, was released on April 13, 2016, with Hastings and Gurihiru returning to their respective roles.

Marvel editor Heather Antos announced the series' cancellation via Twitter on December 19, 2017, along with it ending on the 25th issue. Hastings and Gurihiru later confirmed this on their own accounts.^[2][3]

Fandom

Gwenpool has gained a cult following online, with fan blogs such as fuckyesgwenpool,^[4] gwennypoo,^[5] and gwenpooleblog^[6], along with over 1,300 DeviantArt works tagged "gwenpool".^[7] She has also gained significant attention on other sites such as Reddit and 4chan, especially in /co/.

On September 22nd, 2017, YouTuber Comicstorian uploaded a video titled 'Gwenpool 'Better Than Deadpool, Destruction of the 4th Wall!' – Complete Story," which gained over 560,000 views and 2,200 comments over the next four months.
