About

Ghost of Tsushima is an upcoming action-adventure stealth video game which follows the story of Jin Sakai, one of the last samurai of Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. The game was released for PlayStation 4 on July 17th, 2020.

History

On October 30th, 2017, during the 2017 Paris Games Week, publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Sucker Punch Studios revealed Ghost of Tsushima, an action-adventure video game set in 13th century feudal Japan.[1] On the same day, the trailer for the game was uploaded to YouTube,[2] accumulating over 572,000 views in three years (shown below).

The game was released worldwide on July 17th, 2020.[9]

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends

On August 17th, 2020, Sucker Punch Studios announced Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a free co-op multiplayer mode for Ghost of Tsushima for 2-4 players, inspired by Japanese mythology. The mode is a separate experience from the main campaign, with players being able to select one of four classes (the Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin) to complete wave-based survival missions. The studio also announced that another mission type, Raid, that would be enabled soon after the mode is added to the game in fall 2020.

Gameplay

Ghost of Tsushima incorporates elements of action-adventure and stealth genres, with the combat system of the game heavily focused on sword-fighting. Jin Sakai, the main protagonist of the game, is attempting to prevent the full-scale invasion of the Mongol Empire by abandoning his formal training and "learning the way of the Ghost:" launching small-scale attacks on the enemy to create fear and uncertainty in the Mongol ranks.

One of the core concepts of the game is the total absence of waypoints, with the player being free to explore the open world. The game features an optional "Kurosawa Mode," a black-and-white filter with Japanese voice acting and English subtitles, a tribute to Japanese samurai films.

Reception

The game received positive reviews. As of August 11th, 2020, the game had an 83 critic review score on Metacritic[10] with 114 reviews, and a 9.3 user score with over 14,900 user reviews.

Fandom

On October 30th, 2017, subreddit /r/ghostoftsushima was created, accumulating over 16,000 members in three years.[8]

So, the game's making a buzz on twitter right now, with the unwittingly racist idiots on the western side deciding that the japaneese should be offended by the game, while japaneese side reviews the game well, and say that western critics are racist concern trolls themselves.

As a Japanese, I don't see anything wrong with Ghost of Tsushima. I'm simply grateful that they made an open-world samurai game with such gorgeous graphics. I only learned a little about the Mongol invasion of Japan in history class (and I didn't listen to much of the class) so I don't know if it's perfectly correct historically, but I don't care. Japan itself is making games with Oda Nobunaga as a cute girl soโ€ฆ yeah, who cares. The criticism on GoT that's happening on Western Twitter was a bit of a buzz on Twitter in Japan too, but they were just confused.
