Fate/Grand Order is a role-playing mobile game based on the Japanese media franchise Fate, in which the players travel to several historical periods in order to fix time anomalies, known as singularities. The game has gained massive popularity due its inclusive nature of all the past Fate entries, inspiring fan art and other fan content.

History

The game was developed by Delightworks, and published by Sony Musi Entertainment Japan's subsidiary Aniplex. It was first released on July 29th, 2015 on Android and on August 12th, 2015 on iOS for the Japanese markets;^[1] subsequent versions for other regions were released on later dates, such as June 25th, 2017 for United States and Canada,^[2] or November 21st, 2017 for Korea.^[3]

Plot

In the year 2015, the Chaldea Security Organization, an organization which has helped keep humanity safe throughout history, calculates that humans will go extinct in two years. Chaldea then uses time travel to eliminate anomalies that cause humans to go extinct.

An anime film adaptation of the game titled Fate/Grand Order: First Order released on December 31st, 2016. Two shorts were released one year later on December 31st, 2017: Fate/Grand Order: Moonlight/Lostroom and Fate/Grand Order x Himuro's World: Seven Most Powerful Great Figures Chapter. An anime series adaptation titled Fate/Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia is in production to be released in 2019. There is also a "Learning with Manga" series based around the game.^[5]

Online Relevance

The series has spawned a massive online fandom. The game was the most tweeted-about game of 2018, beating contenders PUBG and Fortnite. ^[4] The game has a subreddit^[6] with over 80,000 subscribers. The USA-centric Facebook page for the game has over 177,000 likes.^[7]
