About

Scrimmy Bingus and the Crungy Spingus, sometimes abbreviated as "Scrimmy Bingus," is a non-existent video game and subsequent franchise made by the also fictional company Crogus Interactive. The covers of the games usually depict a young white male child expressing happiness or wonder, with a multicolored gradient background. Whenever the games are brought up online, those who know about them pretend they were a real and give their favorite iterations of the franchise, often making up new titles and describing nonexistent game mechanics with great detail, in a similar vein to comments on r/bossfight.

Origin

The first image of the first Scrimmy Bingus game on the Nintendo 3DS, was posted on November 27th, 2014 by Tumblr user Utentagen,[1] gaining over 48,000 notes in 4 years. It shows the game as for sale on Amazon, alongside a review made the previous day by user John Doe (presumably Utentagen) complaining about the game being merely static and child's laughter.

The same day as the original Tumblr post, a Facebook[2] page for the game franchise was created. A week later, on December 5th, 2014, Utentagen's Youtube account, which has since been renamed to his real name, Ryan Queen, uploaded gameplay footage of the first Scrimmy Bingus game, gaining nearly 36,000 views in 4 years (reupload shown below).

Two weeks later, on December 18th, 2014, Tumblr user nightmare-bruce[3] posted photos of a physical copy of the first game he made to give to his girlfriend by printing out the original photo and making a new back for the container that showcased taglines for the game, its objective, and boasting over ninety characters. The post gained nearly 18,000 notes in 4 years.

A wiki[4] was created for the franchise on November 26th, 2015. It is mostly empty, only consisting of pages for the franchise itself, Crogus Interactive, and a few parts of the Family Edition.

On April 1st, 2016, the Vinesauce youtube channel posted a video featuring Vinny playing a Newgrounds[5] game of Scrimmy Bingus called "SCRIMMY BINGUS FAMILY EDITION," as well as encompassing the original gameplay video made by Utentagen and several others made by different YouTubers including a simulated Nintendo game and a 3D exploration game. During the video, Vinny recalls fond memories of playing the game as a child. The Newgrounds game has you select a character with stats and a special ability that has no bearing on the gameplay, since the game consists of finding the "Bingus" in every photo, which is usually whatever seems the most out of place in each image. Upon beating the game, the user unlocks a final character to pick, which still changes nothing. Vinny's video has gotten over 180,000 views over the last three years.

The game appears on the lowest tier of /v/'s[6] Iceberg of Obscurity, along with some other non-existent games such as the creepypasta Polybius (shown below).

Shortly after nightmare-bruce made a physical copy, Tumblr user heyitsmeindy[7] showed the photos of the fake DS version of the game made for his little brother, showing the normal front and the back with pictures of Utentagen's gameplay video. The post only garnered a total of 269 notes after 4 years. A gameplay video not featured in Vinny's playthrough was uploaded by Youtuber Slant Carson on May 4th, 2015. It's titled as the direct sequel to the first Scrimmy Bingus, and shows gameplay and character selection similar to the Family Edition and the Nintendo 3DS version. The video only got 8,000 views over 3 years, possibly due to the fact that the uploader had it privatized until only recently.

ScrimmyTunes

On November 22nd, 2015, Ryan Queen uploaded the supposed soundtrack to the original game, titled ScrimmyTunes, lasting fourteen minutes and consisting of seven tracks. He put the full album on his Bandcamp[8] to download for free. The video gained 9,000 views in 3 years. On March 6th, 2019, Queen uploaded a sequel soundtrack of seven songs also available for download.[9]
