About

Matt McMuscles, real name Matthew Kowalewski, is a gaming YouTuber best known for his work with Super Best Friends Play, a popular group of Let's Players throughout much of the 2010s, of which he was a founding member and participant throughout the group's history. After the group split, he continued making YouTube videos and has had several popular series, including "Wha Happun?", where he takes a look at games that have flopped and goes into the reasons why.

History

Kowalewski created his first YouTube channel "theswitcher" in 2010, where he published a variety of videos, including popular compilations of scenes from cheesy 80/90's cartoons. That year, he uploaded a video of himself and his friend Pat Boivin playing the Wii game Kirby's Epic Yarn, with the pair getting comedically angry with each other despite the game's easy nature. This was followed up by a video of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Though Matt's account was later suspended, the videos were re-uploaded to YouTube in 2011 on his new channel, TheSw1tcher.

The duo was contacted by Machinima after their first two videos became popular, and on December 19th, 2010, the group, known as "Two Best Friends Play," launched the first of their videos through a partnership with the network, featuring a Donkey Kong Country Returns play through.

Over the following eight years, the channel grew a large fan base as it played a variety of games and had a variety of series and running gags. The channel became "Super Best Friends Play" as it added streamers Woolie and Liam. On December 16th, 2018, the members of the channel announced they would be parting ways and that Matt and Pat were no longer friends.

Post-Super Best Friends

After the Super Best Friends Play, Kowalewski began focusing on his personal channel, where he posted under Matt McMuscles. There, he has posted videos in a variety of series, the most popular of which is far and away his "Wha Happun?" series, where he profiles stories of flops in video games and film by explaining choices made in the creative process that led to the media's failure. His "Wha Happun?" episode on Fallout 76 is his only video to gain over 1 million views (shown below, left). Other popular videos on his channel include his "Flophouse Files" episode on Mortal Kombat (shown below, right).

Online Presence

The Matt McMuscles YouTube channel has gained over 216,000 subscribers since its December 9th, 2016 creation.[1] Matt also has 85,000 Twitter followers since he joined the platform in February of 2014.[2] He also has a fan wiki[3] and a page on TV Tropes.[4]

I was pretty devastated that Super Best Friends broke up. Was the only lets play channel I ever watched just because it was the only channel that really reminded me of getting together with some friends, playing video games and ripping on each other all night. Been watching a lot of their solo stuff but man, Matt has effortlessly taken the reigns as my favorite solo act of the group thanks to Wha Happun?
