Loli Police Department

About

The Loli Police Department (LPD) refers to a group of VRChat users that founded a virtual reality police department in 2018. All of its members use loli avatars, related to aesthetics of manga and anime, femboys and cat girls, among other signifiers. The LPD engages in police roleplay on the platform. Outside of VRChat, they have a notable presence on Discord, Twitter and YouTube. They were also associated with The Metaverse in 2022, however, they do not have a presence there.

Overview

According to a YouTube video posted by the Loli Police Department on March 28th, 2020, called, "What is the LPD?" the group labels itself as a community organization in VRChat that concentrates its efforts on light roleplay, entertainment, interaction with bystanders and generally having fun within their own community. They emphasize that it is in no way affiliated with actual law enforcement or VRChat moderation. It only exists for the entertainment of VRChat users and viewers while also supporting the general user base with anything they can. The video (shown below) received roughly 29,200 views over the course of one year.

History

The Loli Police Department was founded on February 17th, 2018, evident in a tweet^[7] posted by the organization on February 17th, 2019, that claimed it was their one-year anniversary (shown below). It was originally founded as a joke among a small group of friends in VRChat, allegedly inspired by the oversaturation of Ugandan Knuckles avatars.^[1] It was originally organized on a Discord^[2] server, founded by a user named Hroi (among others) who later became the Chief of Police for LPD.

Throughout 2018 and 2019, the Loli Police Department accumulated members and engaged in roleplay activities within the video game. They also directed short videos and skits to post to YouTube on different channels. These roleplays included "raids," where they'd stake out a user's home or other locations and have fun pretending to light-heartedly raid them. For instance, on September 15th, 2019, YouTuber Meathamski posted a video of an "Illegal LPD Raid," earning over 50 views in three years (shown below).

Although the LPD had been in operation before 2019, it wasn't until November 18th, 2019, that they officialized themselves as an entity in VRChat, moving to what they called "Precinct 18" as their headquarters. This is evident in the YouTube video they posted to their official channel^[4] on November 18th, 2020, titled, "LPD's One Year Anniversary," where the LPD Advisor, DrCheesburger, states the origin date (shown below, left).

Additionally, the LPD posted their first tweet^[3] on January 22nd, 2019, being a link to their Discord server. Also on January 22nd, they posted a meme to Twitter^[5] of a fake police poster reading, "Speeding Is A Crime Don't Put Your Life At Risk," and showing an LPD officer writing a ticket for Sonic the Hedgehog (shown below, right).

The Loli Police Department started their YouTube channel on February 9th, 2019, posting the first trailer for their video series "LPD: VRChat Stories" and earning roughly 14,000 views over the course of three years (shown below, left). On June 23rd, 2019, they posted the first episode of "VRChat Stories" called, "PATROLLING VRCHAT," earning roughly 154,100 views over the course of three years (shown below, right).

On March 31st, 2020, they reached over 2,000 followers and subscribers on both their YouTube and Twitter pages.^[6] Almost a year later, on May 24th, 2021, they uploaded the first episode of their secondary video series called, "LPD Files," titled, "Love Hurts." The video (shown below, left) received roughly 7,900 views over the course of 10 months. On October 9th, 2021, the LPD reached over 10,000 subscribers on YouTube, posting a video about the update that received roughly 3,600 views in five months (shown below, right). In it, they thanked their supporters as well as outlined their future goals.

In March 2022, they were covered in an article written by Input Magazine,^[1] increasing overall awareness of them in the mainstream. As of March 2022, the Loli Police Department has accumulated roughly 20,000 active users, 11,000 members on its Discord server, 4,200 followers on Twitter and 10,500 subscribers on YouTube.
