Marshall Law refers to jokes made after Senator Marco Rubio attempted to assure Americans that martial law was not coming to the country, but instead typed "Marshall Law." This led to a series of jokes about an Eminem regime in America, as Eminem's real name is Marshall Mathers.

Origin

On March 16th, 2020, Marco Rubio tweeted,[1] "Please stop spreading stupid rumors about marshall law. COMPLETELY FALSE. We will continue to see closings & restrictions on hours of non-essential businesses in certain cities & states. But that is NOT marshall law." Rubio intended to write "martial law," meaning a military-based government that suspends the normal rule of law.

For example, Twitter user @MilesKlee[2] joked that the department store Marshall's had become a community center (shown below, left). User @CraigSJ[3] tweeted a GIF from Tekken 7 mocking the tweet, gaining over 320 retweets and 1,600 likes (shown below, right).

For example, Lindsay Ellis tweeted,[4] "Eminem's new album, Marshall Law, not slated for release at this time," gaining over 730 retweets and 5,700 likes (shown below, left). User goldengateblond[5] tweeted, "if "Marshall Law" isn't Eminem's next diss track what are we even doing," gaining over 240 retweets and 1,600 likes (shown below, right).
