About

I'm Banishing You To The Shadow Realm is a quote from the 2021 YouTube video "The ENTIRE Model Series Timeline of Thomas & Friends ā€“ Every Major Event from Seasons 1-12 in Order" by The Unlucky Tug. The scene is used as a redraw or exploitable meme and inspired several YTP-styled edits in the latter half of 2021.

Origin

The original video was posted to YouTube by The Unlucky Tug on June 11th, 2021.[1] In the scene, The Unlucky Tug talks about Sir Handel's disappearance until season 10 of the show and included a joke scene of Sir Topham Hatt sending Sir Handel to the "shadow realm," a concept popularized by Yu-Gi-Oh! (reupload shown below).

On June 13th, 2021, the clip was taken from the video and reposted to YouTube by O Face, where it received over 1.2 million views in five months (shown below).[2]

Spread

On July 9th, 2021, Twitter[3] user Nictrain123 posted an edited version of the original clip where Sir Handel banishes Sir Topham Hatt to the shadow realm using a reverse UNO card. Nictrain123 soon followed with an epilogue scene on the same day, receiving over 340 likes in four months (seen below).[4]

On September 3rd, 2021, YouTuber[5] nickwiththehat (Nick Catalano) posted an animated version of the original clip. The video (shown below) received over 800,000 views in over two months.

The main reason for Sir Handel's disappearance was due to scenes that focused on the narrow gauge characters being done with larger scale models and Sir Handel didn't get one due to budget reasons. No reason has been given as to why he didn't make the cut or why it took so long for him to return. but the popular theory is that the show runners decided he and Duncan were too similar (both are grumpy guys who complain a lot but are nice deep down) and Duncan won out due to him clearly being a favorite of the writers.
