About

Theresa May's Jam Gaffe refers to British Prime Minister's statement regarding food waste. Theresa May stated that she scrapes mold from the top of her jam and eats whats underneath rather than throwing it away.

Background

On February 13th, 2019, British Prime Minister Theresa May gave an example of how to combat food waste during a cabinet meeting. The Daily Mail UK reported, "She also said food shouldn’t be binned just because it is past its best before date, saying shoppers should use ‘common sense’ to check if it is edible."[2] The Daily Mail UK[1] posted a Tweet of their article with the caption "Theresa May: I scrape mould off jam and eat what's underneath" (shown below, left). The tweet gained 290 retweets and 622 likes in one day. The top comments include "weird flex but ok" among other (shown below, right).

That day, Twitter user @christopherhope[3] tweeted "Food Standards Agency source tells @Telegraph: 'While it is possible that removing the mould and a significant amount of the surrounding product could remove any unseen toxins that are present, there is no guarantee that doing so would remove them all.'" The tweet gained 17 retweets and 61 likes (shown below). Food Standards Scotland[4] also responded with a statement saying, “There is also no guarantee that removing mould from the surface will eliminate the risk as some moulds can grow into the product, leaving unseen toxins within the food that could then be consumed.”
