Overview

Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley Rematch refers to the fight that took place on December 18th, 2021, between former YouTuber Jake Paul and the former UFC Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. This rematch of their August 29th, 2021, fight ended differently, with Jake Paul securing a win by Knock Out in the sixth round.

Background

Originally announced on October 29th, 2021, the fight was supposed to be between Jake Paul and Tommy Fury, but when Fury had to back out due to the physical ailments of a broken rib and chest infection, it turned into a rematch fight between Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley, who had previously lost to Paul by split decision back on August 29th, 2021. Though these factors increased hype leading into the fight, it was already trending online due to the undercard slot being taken by Deron Williams, a former NBA all-star point guard and Frank Gore, a five-time pro-bowl former NFL running back with the third most all-time rushing yards.

The pre-fight meet-up was uploaded to Twitter[1] by @Mavs_FFL on December 17th, 2021, who expressed that they were stunned at the two actually going through with the fight despite both having illustrious careers and being retired from professional sports (shown below).

Fight Night

On the night of the fight, there were multiple moments that caught the attention of social media. The first instance came from professional UFC fighter Nate Diaz, who, while walking around ringside, decided to scare a bystander into spilling their drink. This incident was recorded and uploaded to Twitter[2] by @DrakeRiggs_, where it received 20,000 likes and 1.2 million views in two days (shown below).

Deron Williams vs. Frank Gore

The fight between Deron Williams and Frank Gore itself generated a lot of commotion, starting off with Frank Gore walking out to the ring while wearing a Master Chief helmet from Halo. This moment was noticed and tweeted[3] by the San Francisco 49ers fan account @OurSf49ers_, where it gained 1,750 likes in two days (shown below).

During the fight, two moments were highlighted and used in memes, both of them being perpetrated on Frank Gore by Deron Williams. The first moment came in the form of a right hook to Frank's face that resulted in a shocked expression. This moment was clipped and posted to Twitter[4] by the account @Ksea43_, who commented that Frank Gore looked shocked and betrayed by how hard the punch was, earning over 3,500 likes and 150,000 views in two days (shown below).

This expression was then used as part of a meme by the Twitter[5] account @BrandonPerna, making a joke at how Frank Gore could have been playing in the NFL until he was 100 years old, a common joke made in the community as Frank Gore is considered a legend who played at a consistently high level for years past the average prime age of running backs in the NFL (shown below).

The final moment from the fight came when Deron Williams shoved Frank Gore with so much force that he physically left the ring. The hits that led into the shove were clipped and posted on Twitter[6] by the account @Showtime Boxing, which quickly received over 2.5 million views in two days (shown below).

The moment was quickly compared to the scene from Rocky III in which Hulk Hogan throws Rocky outside of the ring, as shown in the tweet[7] by Sportzstewcom, which gained 2,250 likes and 250k views in two days (shown below).

Island Boys Appearance and Altercations

Not all of the excitement took place within the ring, with the Island Boys having several altercations during the event as well. Not long after getting booed off the Club LIV stage in Miami, they were once again being showered in negativity when they arrived at the fight arena. According to @TorRaps on Twitter,[8] the Island Boys were already receiving boos upon walking to their seats (shown below).

The video, tweeted[9] by @TingznWingz on December 19th, 2021, shows a sky-view of the lower area, and a drink being thrown down onto the Island Boys that was swatted away by someone nearby, increasing the growing tension (shown below).

This tension was then escalated with a shoe being thrown from the Island Boy's entourage, as seen in the Twitter[10] video by @trossonma showing a belligerent crowd yelling back and forth at the Island Boys (shown below).

Shortly after the shoe was thrown, security went down to the Island Boys and told them to stop making a scene and calm down, as shown in the Twitter[11] video by KarissaMaxwell (shown below).

Though reports are still speculative, it's commonly believed on Twitter that the Island Boys were then kicked out of the building by security later on, leading to the video tweeted by @MikeHeck_JR[12] that shows the crowd booing the Island Boys as they walk out of the building (shown below).

The Main Event Controversy

The fight between Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley progressed as the previous one did, with plenty of trading blows and back and forth boxing. In the sixth round, however, Jake Paul landed a right punch to Tyron's face that KO'd him, ending the match. This KO sent ripples throughout social media, with many people believing the fight itself was rigged and that Jake threw a sign to Tyron to get ready to take the punch. Well-known TikToker joeshulk posted a TikTok[13] trying to show evidence that Jake Paul signaled to Tyron Woodley and that the fight itself was rigged, earning 1.6 million likes and 40,000 comments in two days (shown below).

Other social media users who believed the fight wasn't rigged had a different take on the matter and opted to tweet out memes calling for Tyron Woodley to lose his "Black card" or otherwise no longer be a representative of the Black community, as seen in the tweet[14] by @canuckduke that received 340 likes in one day (shown below).

Another common reason given for why Tyron lost was that he was improperly trained in boxing technique, with it all being pinned on one man due to his bad self-defense lessons. This is highlighted in a joke by Twitter[15] user @visecs who gained 1,700 likes in one day (shown below).

At this point, I'm willing to accept Jake Paul as a legitimate boxer should he decide to step up and challenge for a world title. But if boxing is becoming relevant again because of the Paul Brothers and nothing else, then that should be telling of the state of boxing – it's not a great one.

And I'm saying this as a boxing fan. If big fights that occurred this year like Usyk vs Joshua, Fury vs Wilder 3, Lopez vs Kambosos, Crawford vs Porter, Chocolatito vs Estrada 2, Pacquiao vs Ugas, and many others wasn't talked about as much as any fight involving the Paul brothers, then the heads within the sport need to reflect on how they should change. Otherwise, boxing might never again reach the heights it once was at.
