About

Copege is a Twitch emote referencing the Copium meme featuring a Peepo of Pepe the Frog crying and wearing a mask attached to a tank labeled "copium." Since its creation in March 2021, the emote has seen considerable use online, with an increased usage occurring during gambling streams and other bad luck moments on Twitch as a form of coping.

Origin

Copium Precursor

The original Copium image was uploaded to 4chan on July 5th, 2019, becoming a widely used reaction image in the following year, as seen in the post by 9GAG user stefanlinkoln[1] on June 26th, 2020 (shown below).

COPIUM

Copege

The Peepo variant created for the Twitch emote was modified by condensing the original Copium image down and then adding animations to turn Copium into a verb, Copege, which became an emote added to BetterTTV on March 4th, 2021, by the user JustRogan[2] (shown below).

Spread

The emote began to slowly spread to Twitch channels in the following months, most notably on May 30th, 2021, when the streamer xQc added it to his Twitch channel after users of his subreddit made a post petitioning for its inclusion into the channel's emote space. A clip in which xQc claims the emote "isn't that good" was uploaded to YouTube on June 1st, 2021, by the channel Daily Goblino Clips[3] (shown below).

The emote then continued to be added to more Twitch channels with the original reaching over 1,300 channels in two years, inspiring a slew of variations turning Copege the emote into a term for any character that is seen huffing Copium out of a tube. This can be seen by the emote added on June 21st, 2021 by the channel CopyNine[4] in which, instead of Pepe huffing Copium, it's Dora the Explorer using her Dora in a Coma meme (shown below).
