Coca Cola Espuma is a viral video and sound effect featuring someone opening a swollen can of Coca-Cola on a bathroom sink while saying, “Coca cola espuma,” Portuguese for “Coca-Cola foam,” as the can explodes into brown fizz suddenly ending the video. The clip first appeared online in April 2020 and has since been remixed with other memes and videos, sometimes seen as a standalone catchphrase.

Origin

The original “Coca Cola Espuma” video was uploaded by YouTuber^[1] Lil Dårk to his channel on April 9th, 2020. In the video, a man is seen holding a bulging can of Coke that he then sets on the bathroom sink and opens, exploding everywhere into a fountain of foam and abruptly ending the clip. This earlier version does not include the sound effect seen in many later iterations of the meme where a man is heard saying “Coca cola espuma.” Since being uploaded, the video accumulated over 29,600 views, 960 likes and 50 comments in seven months (seen below, left). The audio used in the meme featuring a man saying “Coca cola espuma” is pulled from a YouTube^[2] video titled “Coca-Cola Espumante” that was uploaded on August 5th, 2013, which received over 656,000 views, 13,000 likes and 390 comments in seven years (seen below, right).

On April 16th, 2020, the earliest known version combining the two videos was uploaded by YouTuber^[3] XD Gamer Music on Spotify, receiving over 710,000 views, 19,000 likes and 970 comments in seven months (shown below).

Spread

On May 21st, 2020, Redditor DogeRetard posted a meme with Doge to the /r/dogelore^[4] subreddit referencing the video, receiving 247 upvotes and 15 comments in nearly six months (seen below). On June 21st, Redditor Davis_Schina reposted the meme video to the /r/WinStupidPrizes^[5] sub, receiving over 2,500 upvotes, 135 comments and two Reddit awards in four months.

On August 23rd, YouTuber^[6] Danko uploaded a video combining the meme with a clip of a woman being hit in the face with Diet Coke foam, accumulating over 135,000 views, 3,800 likes and 257 comments in roughly two months (shown below, left). On September 5th, YouTuber^[7] D VALENZUELA 249 videos uploaded another remixed version using the sound effect from the meme, accumulating over 106,000 views, 1,700 likes and 300 comments in two months (shown below, right).

On September 8th, Instagram^[8] user perrito_minimalista posted a series of clips remixing the original version of the meme, including a scene from The Simpsons, receiving over 7,400 likes in two months (seen below).
