Once upon a time, Jamie, Ellie, and I spent our days lurking as many places on the internet as we could. At some point I became obsessed with making sure that subcultures got credit for the culture they made so we came up with the idea of writing a bunch of scripts that told the story of how certain memes became popular. I somehow talked all of us (including myself) into getting in front of a camera.

Jamie and Greg and James turned all of it into a database and a site.

The community filled it with knowledge and insight and mounds of cold, slimy love.

Chris and Brad and Don and Amanda and the mods curated it all.

Mike and Patrick brought their memefactory smarts and wit to the site and the series.

An entire team of people and friends would come around the office to contribute ideas and time and help make the site and the series and the company happen. They're hiding throughout the internet but if you make the secret hand sign in front of them, they will transform into a bolt of pure light, revealing their true nature and gaining you 500 XP.

Drew was in the office sometimes.

The GotFunnyPictures name is a reference to an American "educational" propaganda film from WWII called 'Know Your Enemy: Japan.' Although Japan was the country's enemy at the time, and the film itself was hilariously racist, the format was effective.

The white lab coats were partly inspired by my exposure to culture hackers like The Yes Men but also by the story of Leonid Roshal, a pediatrician who negotiated a school hostage crisis in Russia. Parents of the children were crammed into a theater, yelling at officials searching for answers. When Roshal appeared on stage, in his white lab coat and a stethoscope, the room quieted immediately. There was no reason for him to wear his lab coat to this meeting but it conferred authority.
