Contracts were broken with hefty compensations, because it was better than doing anything with a show that salted the earth that bad. I don't even blame George Martin for not wanting to finish his book because he would be walking into a fucking minefield. It's kind of incredible how universal the response was and how the guys in charge just didn't seem to see it coming.
