Tom Hanks' Golden Globe Grimace is a reaction image of American actor Tom Hanks grimacing in reaction to British comedian Ricky Gervais opening monologue at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. After Gervais told the celebrities in the audience to refrain from making political acceptance speeches during his monologue, the camera turned to Tom Hanks making a wincing facial expression. That night, Twitter users began captioning the reaction image.

Origin

On January 5th, 2020, Twitter user @bennyjohnson tweeted the full video of Ricky Gervais giving his opening monologue with the caption, "Ricky Gervais just gave the best opening speech at the #GoldenGlobes ever. He absolutely DESTROYED Hollywood" (shown below). The video gained over 212,600 likes and 65,700 retweets in a day. During the end of his speech the camera shows Tom Hanks grimacing in reaction.

On January 5th, 2020, the MTV News Twitter[1] account tweeted that "The monologue was tough on Tom Hanks #GoldenGlobes" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 6,500 likes and 1,200 retweets in a day. Twitter user @mmpadellanalso[2] shared the reaction image and received over 2,700 likes in a day (shown below, right).

The next day, Twitter user @UScertainty[3] shared an edit of Buzz Lightyear speaking to Woody commenting that Gervais' speech was "legendary" (shown below, left). That same day, Twitter user JulesO2312[4] captioned the image of hanks with "When that one friend who has bad hygiene says someone else smells bad" (shown below, right).

It's rather bold of him to call out Hollywood's corruption and its awful culture of political correctness right in front of nearly all of its most influential figures, as well as mocking the unethical practices of one of the world's most powerful corporations while its CEO is present in the room.

Stating an unpopular opinion more or less anonymously on a meme site isn't really comparable. I don't even know what "other cases" of something like this you're alluding to.
