About
Suicide Lobster, also known as Lagosta suicida in Portuguese, is a viral video of a lobster in a kitchen that dives into a pan of hot oil, possibly believing it is water. The video caused a stir in Brazil, leading many to post meme reactions on social media.
Origin
On April 27th, 2022, @kantorhiburan[1] posted a video on TikTok of the crustacean walking on the edge of a table and then jumping into a pot of boiling oil. The post received over 25 million views in three months.

Spread
The video went viral on the same day it was posted and achieved worldwide buzz, especially in Brazil, where the tragic moment was turned it into an ironic meme. Many found humor in the lobster's dilemma, as shown in this video (seen below) in which a character from a Brazilian TV show is shrunk and struts on the handle of a hot oil pot with the caption "the lobster after seeing the hot oil".[3] The post received 1.2 million views and 251,000 likes in three months.

The content of the memes point towards aspects of how the lobster must have felt. The memes also involve videos related to lobsters, like this episode from _ The Simpsons_[2] where Homer gives up on killing the lobster and decides to turn the animal into his pet. Posted by @a.edition on May 1st, 2022, the content reached over 1,8 million views and 345,000 likes in three months.

Another type of meme focused on how people themselves felt after seeing the lobster dive into the hot oil: a TikTok posted on May 3rd, 2022 shows a woman crying, representing the user’s sadness about what happened to the lobster. It got over 28,000 views and 2,000 likes in three months.[6]
This TikTok, posted on April 30th, 2022 by raydesousasilva1, receiving over 531,000 views and 12,000 likes in three months, shows him shifting suddenly from laughter as the lobster approaches the oil to weeping after its submersion.[4]

Another TikTok user, Matheuskriwat, imitated the lobster's dive, filming himself walking into a swimming pool for a May 1st video that received over 2.2 million views and over 186,000 likes.[5]
