Mashle, full name Mashle: Magic and Muscles, is a manga and anime comedy shonen series concerning a teenage boy with superhuman strength but no magical capabilities who enrolls in a magic school while trying to hide his deficiency from the other students. The series developed a passionate online fandom and elements of the anime have inspired some memes on social media.

The Mashle manga was written by Hajime Kōmoto[1] and was first published in Weekly Shonen Jump on January 27th, 2020. It ran for three years, concluding on July 3rd, 2023.[2]

The story focuses on Mash Burnedead, a child born without magic in a land where living without magic is outlawed. To protect his secret, he is forced to enroll in a magic school to become the top student in his class and earn the title of Divine Visionary. While Mash has no magical ability, he does have superhuman strength, which allows him to overcome challenges and battles with magicians.

The anime premiered on April 3rd, 2023, and has run two seasons as of July 1st, 2024 (trailer shown below), with a third season announced.[4]

The series often plays as a parody of shonen tropes[3] and Harry Potter. The Harry Potter similarities include Mashle's magic academy, Easton, sharing many similarities with Hogwarts, a Quidditch-like sport (anime clip shown below), and a Dumbledore-like headmaster named Wahlberg.

Online Presence

Mashle has developed a passionate fanbase online. The /r/Mashle[5] subreddit has gained over 24,000 subscribers as of July 1st, 2024. The series also has its own Wiki[6] and a page on TV Tropes.[3]

Bling-Bang-Bang-Born refers to the opening song for the second season of the anime series Mashle, sung by Creepy Nuts. The song gained popularity with edits, memes, and parodies because of its catchy melody, dance and lyrics.

On January 6th, 2024, the opening song for Mashle season two anime series titled "Bling-Bang-Bang-Born" by Creepy Nuts was released by the official YouTube channel アニプレックス チャンネル (shown below). On the next day, the full version of the song was released.

Shortly after its release, both the dance and song inspired edits and parodies. For example, on January 18th, 2024, YouTube user 유시후 uploaded a dance animation using the song as a reference. The video received more than 1.2 million views in one month (shown below, left).

On February 3rd, YouTube user me and my brø!! try tøy shøwers!!! 5 uploaded an animation of the character Jax from The Amazing Digital Circus doing the dance. The video received more than 14 million views in three weeks (shown below, right).
