Smooth Harry Maguire refers to an image of English football player Harry Maguire talking to a woman after his team's 2-0 victory over Sweden in the 2018 World Cup in which he scored a goal. The image became a meme format shortly after the match where it was paired with captions intimating that Maguire was flirting with the woman.

Origin

On July 7th, 2018, England defeated Sweden 2-0 in a World Cup Quarterfinal match. Maguire scored the first goal of the match, helping his team reach the semifinals of the World Cup.



After the game, footballer Kyle Walker tweeted an image of Maguire talking to a female fan with a caption making it appear that Maguire was chatting her up. The tweet gained over 72,000 retweets and 273,000 likes (shown below).

Over the course of the day, multiple Twitter users made similar jokes to Walker. Responding to Walker's tweet, user @IamFrench_ referenced It's Coming Home, gaining over 120 retweets and 2,100 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @AntonDeck posted an image macro that gained over 70 retweets and 700 likes (shown below, right).

BBC Broadcaster Steve Crossman tweeted one of the most popular examples of the jokes, gaining over 5,000 retweets and 20,000 likes (shown below, left). Maguire himself got in on the joke, tweeting an example that gained over 45,000 retweets and 181,000 likes (shown below, right).
