POV: I'm A Republican is a series of TikTok POV roleplay videos featuring TikTokers posing as Republicans getting angry over something indicated by the included text. The videos, which typically use the 2017 country rock song “Read Me My Rights” by Brantley Gilbert, became popular in late July 2020 and accumulated duets mocking liberals or democrats.

Origin

On July 26th, 2020, TikToker thejohnnycheese uploaded the first POV: I'm A Republican TikTok that implemented the audio clip "original sound – shelleygg" (shown below). The video which included the text "POV: I'm and you just said minorities should have equal rights" gained over 33,400 likes in a month.

Precursor

On TikTok, videos using “Read Me My Rights” by Brantley Gilbert typically featured TikTokers acting out situational anger. On July 1st, 2020, TikToker yobruz2 uploaded an example that gained over 88,600 likes in two months (shown below, left). A week later, TikToker justinp_25 uploaded another example captioned, "If you put your hand on a woman you better not let me find out and I’m sure the boys will back me up on this right?" that acquired over 63,500 likes in two months (shown below, right).

Spread

On August 8th, 2020, TikToker bigem1ni uploaded a variation of the POV videos including the text, "POV I'm republican and u just told me the CDC knows more about corona virus than I do" (shown below, left). The video acquired over 261,700 likes in two weeks. On August 12th, TikToker thejohnnycheese uploaded another iteration that garnered over 845,700 likes in a week (shown below, center). On August 16th, TikToker xcheezin dueted his video adding the caption, "POV: Im a Democrat and you said everything isn't free and I have to work" (shown below, right). The duet accumulated over 40,400 likes in four days. StayHipp^[1] published an article on the trend.
