Chief Keef^[1] is the stage name of Chicago-born rapper and producer Keith Cozart, who rose to fame with the singles "I Don't Like" and "Love Sosa" off his debut album "Finally Rich" (Interscope Recordings).^[2] The rapper is currently signed to 1017 Bricksquad Records, as well as being the CEO of his own label, Glo Gang. Chief Keef is notable for popularizing Chicago's Drill^[3] sub-genre of trap music, defined by its dark, violent lyrical content and ominous beats.

Online History

In June 2010, Chief Keef registered the Twitter account @ChiefKeef. ^[12] His first tweet was retweeted 176 times and favorited 87 times as of June 2015.

He registered a YouTube channel under the username KeithCozart^[13] in 2010, which he uses to upload mixtape songs. During 2011, Chief Keef released two mixtapes, cementing his Chicago popularity. In March 2012, while under house arrest for weapon possession, he released his mixtape "Back from the Dead" featuring the song "I Don't Like" (shown below).

Besides posting music videos on his YouTube accounts for songs like "Bang", "3hunna", Chief Keef's popularity increased when a video was posted on WorldStarHipHop featuring an ecstatic fan screaming over Chief Keef's house arrest release^[5]; as of June 2015, this video had 377,765 views.

In 2012, a remix of "I Don't Like" by Kanye West, featuring G.O.O.D Music and rappers Pusha T, Jadkiss, and Big Sean was released^[4] and later became a viral hit with over 30 million views as of June 2015. His internet popularity increased after the release of his full length debut album featuring the single "Love Sosa", which earned over 40 million views on YouTube as of June 2015.

A fan subreddit for Chief Keef, /r/chiefkeef, was created in 2012 and over 1,700 users subscribed as of 2015.^[11] In 2014 Chief Keef's mainstream appeal began to decline, he began to emphasize his self-produced work online with a series of projects that were released only digitally for his online fanbase.

During 2015 after the death of Chief Keef's cousin who goes by the stage name "Capo" was killed during a drive-by shooting, after this Chief Keef launched a "Stop the violence" Concert tour, dedicated to funding money for the family of the toddler that got ran over during the escape of the shooters^[15], this has however caused controversy due to Chief Keef's music encouraging said violence. Although Chief Keef has orders of arrest on Chicago, and he continued his tour in the form of hologram he was still prohibited by the mayor of Chicago to appear anywhere near.^[16]

Run for Mayor

After the mayor of Chicago prohibited Chief Keef from appearing he expressed his dissatisfaction with him, and proceeded to announce that he would be running for mayor as a way to replace him.^[17]

Reputation

Chief Keef if often heavily criticized by music critics, because of his sloppy delivery, intentionally simplistic lyrics, intense use of autotune, weak singing, and reliance on production. ^[6][7] These negative aspects are caused by Keef's open and constant abuse of narcotics such as marijuana and purple drank (codeine cough syrup).^[8] This drug use has caused his voice to deepen and his lyricism to become less crisp on recent albums.

In addition, Keef's violent lyrics have come under fire as gang violence skyrocketed in Chicago between 2010 and 2015.^[9] He has also caused controversy by refusing to express compassion over the death of other Chicago citizens. ^[10]

Personal Life

Chief Keef was born in Chicago on August 15, 1995. He was born in an area called "O'block" a dangerous area in the Englewood neighborhood, which he often references in lyrics. He began rapping at 15, and released his debut album at 16.

Chief Keef is also well known for his frequent legal trouble, mostly concerning drug and weapon possession. However, he was also involved in the investigations of several the murder cases of several Chicago gang members.
