No Nuance November

About

No Nuance November is a trend on TikTok collected under the hashtag #NoNuanceNovember that started in November of 2020 where TikTokers post videos giving context-free hot takes and unpopular opinions on a variety of topics. While most TikTokers use the trend to offer political hot takes, others offer hot takes on aspects of subcultures, careers, food, and widely held opinions, with nothing being off limits.

Origin

On November 2nd, 2020, TikToker abolish_ice^[1] uploaded a video describing the idea behind No Nuance November (shown below, left). In the video, they describe how they were inspired by No Nut November to start No Nuance November, a trend where they would post a video every day featuring a new one-sentence-long hot take free of context. They go on to explain that they won't respond to any comments or expand on their reasoning, instead letting viewers discuss the topic amongst themselves. They then present a hot take via an on-screen caption, reading, "The only good cop is a dead cop, and not just in the U.S." The video gained over 6,900 views in 2 weeks. Abolish_ice continued to post No Nuance November videos throughout the month, with their November 8th post garnering over 18,000 views^[2] (shown below, right).

Spread

The trend started to catch on around November 9th, 2020, when TikTokers began posting their own hot takes under the hashtag #NoNuanceNovember. On November 9th, TikToker rynnstar^[3] posted a No Nuance November video featuring nine separate hot takes in order to catch up on the days missed, garnering over 251,000 views in 9 days (shown below, left). On November 10th, TikToker ariestings^[4] uploaded a video under the hashtag garnering over 180,000 views in 8 days (shown below, right). In her video, however, she describes how she's giving some nuance because the lack of nuance in other videos confuses her.

On November 14th, TikToker ediblesrex^[5] posted a No Nuance November video featuring a number of hot takes, garnering over 1 million views in 4 days (shown below, left). On November 17th, TikToker dermangelo,^[6] a dermatologist, posted a dermatology themed version of a No Nuance November video, garnering over 530,000 views in 1 day. As of November 18th, these are the two most popular videos using the hashtag #NoNuanceNovember.

On November 18th, Junkee^[7] and Scapi Magazine^[8] published articles detailing No Nuance November.

Criticism

Some TikTokers used the hashtag to express their distaste with the trend. On November 9th, 2020, TikToker adrian.antonioli^[9] uploaded a video using the hashtag that begins with him describing how No Nuance November "isn't the best idea" because it encourages "lefties" to share uneducated opinions that even they don't understand the context to (shown below, left). He uploaded another No Nuance November the same day featuring nuance (shown below, right).^[10]

On November 11th, social media personality Sarah Schauer tweeted, "this is how No Nuance November is going on tiktok" attached to an image of David Lynch refusing to give context to a statement (shown below). The post gained over 17,900 likes and 980 retweets in 7 days.
