Calling characters "The Sandwich" or inserting the quote into speech bubbles or scenes became commonplace going into 2024 on sites like Reddit's /r/OkBuddyRetard and Instagram.

Origin

On December 30th, 2021, iFunnier^[1] @JohnnyTesticles_2015 posted a meme with a black-and-white portrait of Donald Trump and a top Impact font caption reading in all caps, "NIGGAS CALL ME 'THE SANDWICH,'" receiving over 350 smiles in three weeks (shown below).

Also on December 30th, 2021, Redditor^[2] stalky_boi_main posted a slightly cropped version of the meme to /r/okbuddyretard, gaining over 850 upvotes in three years. The slight crop indicates that it was originally shared on iFunny, although unconfirmed.

Spread

On June 3rd, 2023, Instagram^[3] user @yourlordandsaviorforeskinjesus tweeted a Name Soundalike meme that referenced "The Sandwich" meme, gaining over 1,700 likes in 11 months (shown below, left).

On June 13th, 2023, X^[4] user @B00K0FTRIBE tweeted a meme with Henry Cavill's Superman being asked, "Why do niggas call you 'the sandwich'?" In the caption, @B00K0FTRIBE claimed that the meme was originally posted in 2022, however, an earlier post has not yet been discovered. Regardless, the tweet received over 1,300 likes in 11 months (shown below, right).

Going into 2023, meme creators on /r/okbuddyretard continued the trend, like Redditor^[5] WrongFun8521 on November 13th, 2023, who used the "Say My Name" scene from Breaking Bad, gaining 12 upvotes in seven months (shown below).

Viral memes following the trend continued in 2024 on X^[6] and Instagram.^[7]
