MC Ride Lying in Bed refers to a viral image of the Death Grips vocalist MC Ride lying in bed in the dark, with a flashlight shining upon him. Originating from a Death Grips music video for "Whatever I Want (Fuck Who's Watching)," the image has gained popularity in memes in 2019, particularly when paired with Me Lying Awake at Night joke setup.
Origin
On November 13th, 2013, experimental band Death Grips uploaded a music video for their song "Whatever I Want (Fuck Who's Watching)" to YouTube.[1] In the closing moments of the video, the band's drummer Zach Hill shines a flashlight upon the band's vocalist MC Ride (Stephan Burnett), who is lying on a bed in the dark, staring at the ceiling.
The first documented use of the image in memes is a January 2017 You Have Been Visited By post by an unknown Facebook[2] group. On January 20th, 2017, the image was scrapped by awwmemes (scrapped image shown below).[3]
Spread
Sometime prior to May 2nd, 2017, an unknown user posted a Cute Anime Girls Sleeping meme which included the photograph of MC Ride. On May 2nd, iFunny[4] user Syndromw_Of_a_Downs made the earliest found repost of the image.
The image did not see significant spread until prior to January 23rd, 2019, an unknown user posted an image macro based on the image captioned "me thinking about Minecraft roof designs for my next build." On January 23rd, Redditor[5] KousakaK reposted the meme to /r/okbuddyretard where it received over 1,900 upvotes in six months (shown below, left).
On May 25th, Instagram[6] user monsieur.egg posted an image macro reading "me lying awake at night knowing that we live in a world where sex is still legal." The post (shown below, right) received over 5,600 likes and was widely circulated online in the following weeks.
Following the viral spread of the post, the image gained notable popularity in memes, particularly when paired with "me lying awake at night" joke setup.
