Keep the Heid refers to a phrase which was said by First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon during one of Scotland's coronavirus briefings. The phrase which is Scottish slang for "stay calm".

Origin

On the July 14th, 2020, Nicola Sturgeon advised people to 'keep the heid' when responding to a question as part of the Scottish Government's daily briefing on that day. (see below)

Spread

Shortly after the briefing, many people on Twitter started quoting "keep the heid".

On July 15th, 2020, Nicola Sturgeon tweeted the Scottish Government's "F.A.C.T" campaign guidance accompanied by the hashtag #KeepTheHeid.

Soon after, #KeepTheHeid started trending on Twitter and trended first in Scotland.

Some praised the use of the phrase as well as finding it hilarious that it was "effectively part" of the Scottish Government's campaign.
