Gooigi

About

Gooigi is a playable doppelgänger of Luigi introduced in Nintendo's port of Luigi's Mansion to the Nintendo 3DS. However, it was not until the E3 presentation for the upcoming video game Luigi's Mansion 3 that Gooigi became known to a wide audience. Gooigi is made of slime and is a tool players will use to help solve puzzles. After the character's introduction at the E3 presentation, social media users quickly made jokes about the character and its name, often with sexual innuendo.

Origin

Gooigi first appeared as a new mechanic in the Nintendo 3DS port of Luigi's Mansion, which released October 12th, 2018.^[2] On June 11th, 2019, during Nintendo's E3 Presentation, Nintendo announced Luigi's Mansion 3. In the game, players can create the doppelgänger Luigi called "Gooigi." Gooigi appears to be made of a gelatinous substance and will help in certain puzzles of the game, but cannot touch water.

Spread

Immediately after the announcement, people began to joke about the character. User @broderick^[1] joked that in response to fans sleuthing out Luigi's Penis Size, Nintendo naively named a character "Gooigi" (shown below, left). User @Tonytula^[3] joked that Gooigi's existence implied the existence of a "Wagooigi," gaining over 500 retweets and 2,100 likes (shown below, right).

Other Twitter users began making sexual innuendos based off the name. User @leyawn^[4] joked about the game's mechanics by tweeting "i'm going to suck off some ghosts with my wet friend gooigi," gaining over 200 likes (shown below, left). The Twitter account for porn company Brazzers^[5] tweeted "Gooigi is Luigi's pornstar name," gaining over 260 likes (shown below, right). "Gooigi" was covered by Endgadget,^[6] Polygon,^[7] and LA Times.^[8]
