About

Celebrities Endorsing Lula For President refers to a series of parodies about celebrities declaring their votes for the opposition candidate for the 2022 Brazil General Election, former President (2003-2011) Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, often known simply as "Lula." The endorsements being posted on Twitter come from the “photoshopped” pictures of famous pop culture celebrities like Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and many others.

Origin

After the first voting day to elect Brazil’s new President ended with no clear winner, it was decided a follow-up election between the current President, Jair Bolsonaro, and the former President, Lula, will occur on October 30th, 2022. The release of a scandalous video[1] of Jair Bolsonaro speaking to masons[2] led some people on Twitter to create memes in which world celebrities and their families joined in on the chain of those disappointed with the President.

One of the first parody memes was posted by @futurehadid on October 4th, 2022, in which she uses a picture of Dua Lipa’s family to pretend she is a mother that is disappointed with the current Brazilian President and that she’s voting for the opposite party. The post (see below) received 96,000 likes and 9.836 retweets in six days.

Spread

The trend quickly spread on Twitter[3] with other fake tweets being created, like this post by @siteptbr, on October 4th, 2022, which shows screenshots of fake profiles of celebrities like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, expressing their disappointment with the scandalous video of the current President. The post had 82,900 likes and 12,000 retweets in six days.
