I honestly fail to understand how so many anti-AI artists are also fan-artists.

I'm not as worried about the direct impact of AI on artists as I am over governmental reactions to AI. I can't really say I'm hopeful of how those kinds of rights will be handled, because these huge corporations will just add "we can use your likeness however we see fit lol" to their employment contracts. I mean, Adobe is even proposing make it illegal to copy someone's art style, which is absolutely insane. Since media companies own swaths of IP and copyright practically lasts two entire human lifetimes, being strict against AI is actually going to be harm smaller artists in the end.

In section 29.21 of the Copyright Act of Canada, however, allows non-commercial user-generated content, AKA fanart, and I'm pretty sure that the definition of "commercial" can be debated. I hope this kind of thing will spread elsewhere, but I won't hold my breath.
