About

Garfield's "I Know Where You Live" is an exploitable video meme from the 2009 The Garfield Show cartoon in which Garfield says the line, "I know where you live," at the end of the "Mother Garfield" episode. The line gained memetic usage in June 2023 on YouTube due to the dark humor of the character threatening the viewer, which sparked edited videos with specific maps and locations trying to guess where netizens live. The trend also gained traction in May 2024 on TikTok.

Origin

On November 2nd, 2009, The Garfield Show[1] aired the episode "Mother Garfield" in which Garfield notices neglected eggs cooling dangerously in a tree branch and hatches them himself. At the end of the episode, Garfield threatens the viewer into not telling anyone he took care of the baby bluebirds by saying, "I know where you live."

The earliest online mention of the episode was uploaded to YouTube[2] on November 21st, 2020, by user @nieJi78, which amassed more than 222,000 views and 1,500 likes in four years (seen below).

Spread

On June 2nd, 2023, YouTube[3] user @Blue_eyes1 posted a clip of the The Garfield Show episode adding an IP address that tracks to an island close to Madagascar after the character says the line, "I know where you live." The post (seen below) amassed more than 130,000 views and 1,900 likes in a year.

In early May 2024, the clip became a viral exploitable meme on TikTok in which users added random maps or IP addresses to scare people into thinking they had their address leaked by Garfield.

For instance, on May 12th, 2024, TikTok[3] user @jayjaythejoker0 uploaded a comedy skit video using the "I know where you live" clip (seen below, left), which garnered more than 1 million plays and 93,000 likes in two days. On the same day, TikTok[4] user @therickyberwick posted a similar skit video, adding a picture of his window after Garfield's "I know where you live" line. The post received roughly 2.3 million plays and 167,000 likes in two days.
