The thing about The Great Filter is that evolution of a sapient species is quite small. What was found out a couple months ago is that one of the key proteins in humans for higher brain functions originated probably from a virus. While we have yet to find another sapient intelligent species in the galaxy this doesn't pose well for the chances of how common intelligent life is. Simply put if the evolution of intelligent life on Earth was a freak of nature occurrence then the chances of intelligent life elsewhere in the galaxy are slim.
Evolution of intelligent life we thought it was a one in a million chance, but it's looking more like one in a billion chance.
It's looking more like The Great Filter is behind us rather than ahead of us.
