I hope that this will mark the start of a trend that finally ends this shitty age of "dudebro" shooters. DOOM did the important step in gameplay. Now the genre finally needs to mature in terms of story. After all: just because your game has a story compared to a loose string of missions and said story is "dark and edgy" doesn't actually make it mature.
Many WWII shooters imitate the beach landing from Saving Private Ryan… but how many actually try to imitate what the scene was about?
There's a pretty jarring discontent between the humanism and well-crafted individuality of the cutscenes and the mechanical feel of mowing down enemies with your gun in the same center spot every time in the gameplay footage. Granted, the latter is what World War 1 was actually like, but when it's spliced in between the rousing cutscenes of taking pictures in a plane or swinging your sword through enemy lines, it feels weird.
