Because being young and trying to share your excitement and enthusiasm with people only to be shot down by the hard-hitting retort of "shut up, nerd" by nearly an entire classroom isn't gonna turn one into a massive introvert. Most people don't trust others when it comes to showing them their feelings, beliefs, tastes, life goals, etc. so they tend to keep all of this to themselves. Probably because those other people they opened up to didn't share the same thoughts as them, showed their disagreement in a really bad way, or just didn't give a damn even after all the effort they put in letting them know something about their true selves.
