Tentara Itu Harus Hitam (Eng. An Army Should Be Black), also known as Shap / Shiap / Siyap / Syap, is a catchphrase from a viral video about a Tentara Nasional Indonesia (Eng. Indonesia National Army) commander telling the other soldiers that an army should have "black skin," claiming it makes them appear scarier to their enemies. The video gained virality in Indonesia in exploitables and parodies.

Origin

On February 2nd, 2019, Facebook[1] page Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Terupdate uploaded the earliest known video of a commander telling their soldiers that the army should have black skin. The video received more than 2,200 reactions and 1,700 shares in three years. On February 12th, 2019. YouTuber[2] mbandus channel reposted the video with subtitles and received more than 500,000 views in three years (shown below, with translation).



Commander: "An army should be black!"
Soldier: "Yes sir!"
Commander: "So you will look scarier!"
Soldier: "Yes sir!"
Commander: "There is no army with white skin!"
Soldier: "Yes sir!"
Commander: "(An army) should at least have black skin like you!"
Soldier: "Yes sir!"
Commander: "Your skin is black enough."
Soldier: "Yes sir!"
Commander: "Don't ever let your skin go white!"
Soldier: "Yes sir!"
Commander: "Or else you'll get a violation!"
Soldier: "Yes sir!"
Commander: "Keep your skin black."

The video didn't get significant attention online until April 2022 when it was parodied and made into an exploitable meme alongside various video game references. The earliest known example was posted on April 4th, 2022, when Facebook[3] page Front Pembela Magna uploaded an edit by using the game Granblue Fantasy. The video received over 450 reactions and 250 shares in roughly five months (shown below).

On April 5th, 2022, Facebook[4] user Sad Sklton II uploaded a similar edit to the Granblue Fantasy meme by using a trailer for the game Clash of Clans. The video received more than 1,000 reactions and 725 shares in roughly five months (shown below).



On April 8th, 2022, YouTuber[5] Ya Begitulah uploaded a slowed + reverb edit version of the video, receiving more than 157,000 views in four months (shown below, left). On April 10th, Facebook[6] user AVE AINX RYUGAMI uploaded the animated version of the video. It received 405 reactions and 158 shares in a similar timeframe. On the next day, YouTuber[7] Yggttrou CH🀑 reposted the video and accumulated more than 470,000 views in four months (shown below, right).



On April 13th, 2022, YouTuber[8] Kucing Menangis uploaded an edit using Team Fortress 2 characters. The video received more than 3.8 million views in four months (shown below, left). On April 17th, 2022. YouTuber[9] Rechan uploaded an edit using the game Roblox and received more than 591,000 views in four months (shown below, right).
