About

Rocket Raccoon Crying refers to a clip of Marvel Comics character Rocket Raccoon crying out in anguish. In June 2023, the clip achieved popularity as a video caption meme format after a maple syrup footjob meme based on it went viral.

Origin

On May 5th, 2023, Marvel superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the film, character Rocket Raccoon cries out in grief and desperation as he witnesses his friends being shot and killed.

On June 10th, 2023, iFunny[2] user DiagnosedCancerPatient posted the earliest found meme based on the clip, captioning it, "No, I'm not giving you a maple syrup footjob under the table at Denny's," referencing the maple syrup footjob meme. The post (shown below) received over 160 smiles in three months.



Spread

On June 23rd, 2023, X[3] gimmick account Bad Marvel Memes (@AvengersBad) reposted the meme, gaining over 2,200 reposts and 17,300 likes in three months.

Prior to June 19th, 2023, an unknown user posted the earliest derivative meme based on the format, captioning the video, "No I am not letting you drive your Hot Wheels car across my boobs." On June 19th, 2023, YouTube[4] user memer boy 69 reposted it (shown below).



The format did not see further spread until August 2023, when it regained popularity on iFunny. On August 30th, 2023, iFunny[5][6] users KillFandoms and SWARGG posted video caption memes based on the clip that received over 920 smiles and 540 smiles, respectively (shown below, left and right).



In late August and early September 2023, multiple versions of the meme were posted on iFunny and shared on other sites.
