I Told You We Needed More Glitter” or Trolls "Dress Up" Short refers to a scene from the Dreamworks 2017 animated short Trolls Holiday in which the character Mrs. Dinkles speaks in a rough voice and says, ”Meow. I Told You We Needed More Glitter” after Queen Poppy stumbles upon Biggie playing dress up. The scene became an exploitable meme format on TikTok in early December 2023 with which users would show their soft and tougher sides in lip dubs and other skits.

Origin

Trolls “Dress Up” animated short was released online on November 18th, 2017, as part of a sneak peak for the Trolls Holiday special. In one scene in particular, the main character Queen Poppy stumbles upon Biggie playing dress up with Mr. Dinkles and advises them to add more glitter on the pet, to which he replies with a rough voice, “I Told You We Needed More Glitter.” The scene^[1] (shown below) amassed over 50 million views and 90,000 likes in six years.

Years later, the Trolls scene resurfaced on TikTok and inspired a trend on the platform in which people shared their soft and tougher sides using Mr. Dinkles’ voice. For example, on December 20th, 2023, TikTok^[2] user @klezuk shared the original Trolls clip paired with the overlay texts “My voice when I talk to animals” and “My voice when I talk to people.” The video (shown below, left) amassed more than 20 million plays and 4.1 million likes in three days.

On December 21st, TikTok^[3] user @tulevech used klezuk’s sound, adding the overlay texts “Standing up for myself” and “Standing for my friends.” The video (shown below, right) received roughly 1.3 million plays and 314,000 likes in two days.
