Overview

Persona 5 Voice Actress Erica Lindbeck AI Voice Controversy refers to an online controversy involving prominent anime and video game voice actress Erica Lindbeck (known for voicing the Persona 5 character Futaba Sakura and the Helluva Boss character Loona, among others) in which Lindbeck condemned the use of her voice in fan-made AI voice videos on YouTube and elsewhere, resulting in backlash and her eventually leaving social media by deleting her Twitter and Instagram accounts. The video that inspired Lindbeck's tweet was a Futaba Sakura AI song cover of Bo Burnham's "Welcome to the Internet."

Background

On July 5th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @FahneXIV tweeted at Persona 5 voice actress Erica Lindbeck (who voices the character Futaba Sakura), writing, "@ericalindbeck hey so I just found this video, did you consent to having your voice used for AI?" The video in question was uploaded to YouTube[2] (since-deleted) by YouTuber TheMusicalCreeper and was titled, "Futaba Sakura sings 'Welcome to the Internet' [Bo Burnham]."

Two days later, on July 6th, 2023, Erica Lindbeck posted a tweet (since-deleted) that was likely in response to Twitter[1] user @FahneXIV in which she linked the YouTuber TheMusicalCreeper's video and wrote, "Please report this stuff you guys, this is such a violation." Evident in screenshots posted elsewhere,[3] Lindbeck's tweet gained over 3,000 likes in three hours (shown below).

Online Reactions

Lindbeck's tweet inspired a slew of reactions, both positive and negative, online in the following days. For instance, on July 7th, 2023, Twitter[4] user @BenjaminOscar77 seemingly sided with Lindbeck, urging his followers to report similar videos on YouTube, gaining roughly 2,900 likes in five days (shown below, left). Alternatively, on July 7th, a user on 4chan's /v/[5] board posted a screenshot of Lindbeck's tweet, captioning it, "When will AI fully replace VA hacks?" (shown below, right).

In the comment section of the original YouTube video, YouTubers wrote comments that defended Lindbeck while others wrote comments that criticized her, including comments that belittled her line of work (example from Twitter[6] shown below, left). Due to the backlash, YouTuber TheMusicalCreeper deleted their "Futaba Sakura sings 'Welcome to the Internet' [Bo Burnham]" video. Regardless, others on the platform reuploaded it. Then, YouTuber TheMusicalCreeper left comments under the reuploads, condemning them in defense of Lindbeck (example from Twitter[7] shown below, right).

The defenses for the AI bros makes sense at a surface level… like "But we do it for other characters", but it falls apart as soon as you apply the human element (fittingly).

She's understandably freaked out that people have made a convincing cover of her singing a song that's vulgar to say the least.

She wasn't even rude about it, the creator respected it and took it down.

Now, AI bros could have had a civil debate about the ethics of this- nah

They spite posted it all over the place, attacked Erica, and harassed her until she left twitter.

For the crime of… not feeling comfortable about a video where she sang those things? This wasn't a cease and desist, she didn't send lawyers after him, she asked .

You have soundalikes doing porn of her characters all the fucking time. I mean, seriously, voice acted Futaba and Loona porn is all over the internet. Big difference is it was about the characters.

This is about a crude song with her name and voice themselves advertised in the title. Someone being a celebrity doesn't give people a free pass to be dicks to them.

If you want FUTABA singing "Welcome to The Internet", drop Erica's name from the title, keep her uninvolved, and find someone to voice act Futaba yourself.

Basically this, but with a microphone instead of a pencil. You get the idea.

Little Kuriboh admonishing others for "stealing" people's I.Ps when he made his entire internet career out of taking and profiting off of animators, writers (even if he changes the dialogue the story still largely sticks to the original) and musician's works was the highlight of this whole thing. That guy doesn't have a shred of integrity.

Speaking of those, this reminds me of how back in the day publishing companies weren't happy about how Abridged series were stealing their content and ruining the image of the series. History has shown that Abridged series did not in fact damage any brand names and I doubt the same will occur for voice actors. Community generated A.I content is just something companies, actors, and artists are going to have to learn to adapt to whether they like it or not.

I think that as long as the works are free and labeled as A.I generated content it's fine.
