About

Discord Sings refers to a game popular on Discord servers participants of which attempt to type the lyrics of various songs line by line in perfect order. Inspired by similar games played by users on forums and social media, the game gained prominence after in July 2019 recreating CaptainSparklez' 'Revenge' in this fashion became a viral trend.

Origin

Prior to Discord popularity, variations of the game were played by users in chats, on forums and imageboards, with the earliest known variation being a collective count from number one to higher number such as 100 or 1000.

One of the earliest documented instances of the game being played in Discord is an April 14th, 2019, tweet by Twitter[1] user @breakineuphoria depicting several members of an unknown Discord server recreating "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen line by line.

On July 8th, 2019, YouTuber[2] king posted a video of their Discord server attempting to say all the lyrics to "Revenge" in order, starting over after every error. The video received over 40,000 views in two months and over 150,000 vies in one year.



Spread

The video sparked a YouTube and Twitter trend in which users posted videos of attempting to recreate "Revenge" line by line on Discord servers, with the montages being set the song. For example, a July 20th, 2019, video by Twitter[3] user @jiazji received over 100,000 views, 4,800 retweets and 10,400 likes in one year (shown below).

Following the viral spread of the Creeper, Aww Man renditions, videos of users recreating other songs gained were posted on Twitter, YouTube and Instagram in the following year. For example, on July 29th, 2019, YouTube[4] user Jean-Pierre Unfunny posted a video of a Discord server attempting to sing several songs at once which gained over 2.9 million views in one year. On August 9th, 2020, YouTuber[5] D4rant posted a video of a Discord server singing "To Be Beautiful" that gained over 280,400 views.



In the following year, the game maintained significant popularity on Discord servers, with multiple videos of various songs being typed out by users being uploaded to Twitter, YouTube, TikTok and other online platforms.

Among Us Sings

In 2020, the format received further development with various songs being recreated in a popular video game Among Us (example shown below). For example, a video posted by TikTok[6] user hiririririririri on October 18th, 2020, received over 9.1 million views (shown below).
