Coofer

About

Coofer refers to several Oomer Wojaks that parody a person who is sick with COVID-19. Coofer wojaks usually portray a stereotypical Chinese person in Wuhan tasting bat soup and starting to cough ("coof") violently, and are usually paired with captions such as "I'm coofing."

Origin

On January 23rd, 2020, an anonymous user of 4chan's /pol/ board posted^[1] the earliest known Coofer wojak (shown below), with the same user making more similar posts^[2][3] on the same day.

On January 24th, 2020, the same /pol/^[4] user made a Coofer post based on a variation of Coomer wojak. In the same thread, another user posted^[5] the image of "The 20 year old Coofer" based on the Coomer meme (shown below).

Spread

In the following days, the image saw spread on 4chan, primarily in /pol/.^[6] On January 26th, 2020, an anonymous 4chan's /gif/^[7] board user posted a voiced video based on a wojak depicting a stereotypical Chinese person (YouTube reupload shown below).

In the following days, the video received a significant spread online, with reposts on Twitter,^[8] iFunny and YouTube. For example, a January 27th, 2020, repost by iFunny^[9] user 1ghostaku received over 1,500 smiles in two months. A January 30th, 2020, reupload by YouTube^[10] user GB Austin accumulated over 54,800 views.

In the following months, more videos featuring Coofer characters were posted on 4chan and on YouTube.

Corooner

Corooner refers to Oomer Wojak memes that parody a person who is sick with COVID-19. The subformat bears minimal differences from the Coofer memes, with the major exception being use of the words "corooner," "corooneing" etc.
