Sticky Sticky
[NEW SPAM FILTER] Threads with Korean characters in the title

Due to the influx of Korean spam, James has added a feature that auto-bans any users who put Korean characters in the titles of their threads. In other words,
DON'T PUT KOREAN IN YOUR THREAD TITLES
Our moderator Arcanine was (accidentally) IP and site-banned for trying to do this, and it took forever to undo everything. He (and the rest of the mod team) don't want this happening to any other users, so please keep this in mind when making threads!

In case you didn't know, James also has it where it would show a GIF if you tried to make a thread with a Korean title. Here's the glorious GIF for those interested:

Leads to ban page if you try to back out or refresh.

Bonus:

The GIF is from Memories of Murders and here it is:

Also, it turns out that emoticons such as ㅎ_ㅎ that include Korean characters will also get you banned. So, don't use those.

That….. actually might backfire.

Erm… I feel that's a bit of a brutal filter. Couldn't just do an auto 1-week suspension? Seems like people could easily get screwed over if they don't know this one specific rule and want to have some creative symbols in their thread title.

I hope this isn't a permanent thing, even if it was sort of accidentally my idea.
I'm glad it reduces spam, but I still feel bad "demonizing" another person's language, despite the valid, non-discriminatory reasoning behind it. And on a more logical level, this "countermeasure" can only work so long. Not all the spam is Korean, and who knows if the spambot creators will eventually realize what's happening and just add a Google translate step to their spambot algorithm, or even if we do actually stop the Korean spam for good, there's no guarantee that an equally aggressive non-Korean spamming brigade won't ever emerge.

In essence, I feel like this is like using duct tape after a minor fender bender. A good enough temporary solution, but something that shouldn't be relied upon as a permanent solution.

But now they'll just advertise in English (why would they even advertise in Korean in the first place?) and at least when they were in Korean they stuck out.

I was about to get myself banned again just to see that gif one more time, now I don't have to :P

But I think its a good idea, it is extreme but if it prevents those spam bots I am all for it. Its not like any one in KYM types in Korean outside of sh!tpost reasons

They're still super easy to notice when spam threads are in English. It's hardly a difference.

I hope James doesn't intend to have this as a permanent solution. As some emoticons use korean characters, this could realistically lead to ip spam-bans on regular users; and if they don't know about this, it's even easier.

>Loving the site and the community for years too shy to make an account
>Finally works up the courage to make an account but still drifts for a while
>Makes first forum post in his native tongue
>Banned

Lol I hope that never happens to anyone.

Same.

Idea: Good
Execution: Questionable

At the very least a minimum should be applied, like amount of Korean characters, amount of times someone tries in a short time period, account age, alongside a big fat heads up whenever someone tries.

I'm all up for auto-bans, but a single Korean character giving you a permaban without any clear heads up is gonna bite us back.

No, no, no.
This will most certainly backfire.
What would be better is that the user who makes a thread w/ Korean is auto-suspended instead of auto-banned. The thread that contains Korean letters should instead be made only viewable by moderators, who can judge whether or not it is spam.

Why

The ratio of actual threads with Korean text compared to actual spam isn't similar enough to make this useful.

James can unban the few users that use Korean text without mal intent.

Maybe have a character limit (more than 3 Korean letters = ban) to remove the cases of users not doing it on purpose?

Considering the quantity of spam, I'd have no interest even glancing at such an area should we have such a system.

Also it's spam. Spam equals ban.

Make that 4 or 5, and it could work.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how exactly do you contact a mod if you're IP banned?

Anyway, I too feel like this is a pretty bad idea. I wonder, is it possible to instead, say, prevent a person from making a thread if they use Korean characters? Like, the site just won't accept the use of Korean characters for a thread title and a little message would pop up.

Email.

It takes me about a second to unban an ip address. I just wasn't at a computer when Arcanine banned himself.

The issue here is more that someone who is new(ish) to the site might not realize that. I know we direct them to the contact form, but take in mind that internet users are lazy and stupid.

@Girlie

As said, there's a contact form.

Or just hit us up on the IRC.

But the contact form is the default.

Cause it's a bad idea

Why not just prevent forum threads from being created using Korean letters, seems like a better solution to me, is that not possible or something?

Why not just build a wall around KYM and make Korea pay for it?

Don said in the IRC that James changed it so that it's only if you put Korean in the title of a forum thread within your first week of joining. Way better than before.

Have to agree, it's better this way.
Getting banned for having Korean characters in you title regardless of not being a spam bot was rather brutal
